Edmund Cavazos, III, MD, JSOCCP, CCJAS
Medical Director of Cedar Crest Hospital & RTC
Edmund Cavazos III, M.D. is the Medical Director at Cedar Crest Hospital. Dr. Cavazos received his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. A member of various medical associations, he pursues being a vocal advocate for patient care and patient rights.
A national, state, and local guest lecturer on child, adolescent and adult psychiatric topics, Dr. Cavazos came to Cedar Crest Hospital as a native Texan, after serving as the Medical Director for a large Behavioral Health Organization for the past 20 years.
Dr. Cavazos has an extensive background. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, as he was a recipient of a military Health Professional Scholarship Program. He was the former Medical Consultant, Medical Review Officer for the Army Drug & Alcohol Prevention Control Program, as well as the Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry at Ireland Community Hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
In addition, he was the first physician in the nation to complete his Certification in Juvenile Sex Offender Counseling and is also a Certified Criminal Justice Addiction Specialist for Adolescents. He is a member of the National Task Force for Juvenile Youth Offender Treatment, and as a psychiatrist, he serves as a preceptor of Psychiatric Advanced Register Nurse Practitioners for Vanderbilt School of Nursing and the University of Louisville.
Shibu Kuncheriah, M.D.
Child and Adolescent Medical Director
Cedar Crest Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Shibu Kuncheriah has joined our medical staff as Child and Adolescent Medical Director.
Dr. Shibu Kuncheriah received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Temple University School of Pharmacy and graduated magna cum laude. He completed a Child and Adolescent fellowship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and an Adult Psychiatry Residency at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kuncheriah has worked as a psychiatrist at inpatient hospitals and community mental health centers in Ohio and West Virginia. Dr. Kuncheriah was also an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at West Virginia University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, West Virginia and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Behavioral Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kuncheriah is a Board Certified Psychiatrist in both Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is a Registered Pharmacist. He is licensed in Texas and four other states.
Taghi Shafie, M.D.
Medical Director, Outpatient Services
Dr. Taghi Shafie received his medical degree in 1973 from the University of Isfahan, Iran, followed by completion of a one-year psychiatry residency through the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and a second year of residency in neurology through Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After 28 years of professional experience in Houston, he has joined Cedar Crest Clinic in Killeen, Texas, to provide outpatient services to the Central Texas community.
Sarah McClain, M.D.
Cedar Crest Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Sarah McClain has joined our medical staff and is providing psychiatric services to our inpatient adult programs.
Dr. McClain received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She completed a Psychiatry Residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Dr. McClain worked as an ER Staff Psychiatrist at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and also as an Assistant Instructor for UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Texas. Dr. McClain received the Academic Year Award for Outstanding Resident Teacher of Medical Students in 2001-2002. Dr. McClain also served as a Staff Psychiatrist for the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and as a Psychiatrist for the Veterans Service Center in San, Angelo, Texas. Dr. McClain has worked as an inpatient Psychiatrist at River Crest Hospital in San Angelo, Texas, and served as the Medical Director for MHMR Service for the Concho Valley, San Angelo, Texas. Prior to coming to Cedar Crest Hospital, Dr. McClain was in private practice in San Angelo.
Dr. McClain is a Board Certified Psychiatrist in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
